Co-Washing with Cleansing Conditioners

As a female with curly hair, it’s been a struggle to find the right balance for my hair. How often do I wash it? Which shampoos and conditioners are best? And let’s not even get started on which products might tame my frizz and give me shine and control at the same time. If I wash my hair too often, my scalp is dry and my hair is stripped of it’s natural oils. If I wait too long to wash my hair, it will lose any volume and get greasy in the roots.

One thing that has been recommended is “co-washing”, cleansing your hair using only conditioner. Wait… shampoo washes your hair, not conditioner! Shampoo does wash – and strip your hair dry of any oils, good and bad and then you use conditioner to add back the moisture that you just stripped from your hair. Cleansing conditioners are meant to do both in one; clean the bad oils from the hair and leave the good.

One of the most well-known cleansing conditioners is WEN by Chaz Dean. WEN is made up of a 5-in-1 formula that combines shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler and leave-in conditioner. For a girl with curly hair, this saves a lot of time by eliminating multiple procedures and putting them all in one bottle. Add a sweet almond mint feature and you have icing on the cake. To use, simply use just like you do with other shampoos but be prepared, you won’t get any lather from this product because there are no harsh sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate. Leave this mixture on your hair for the remainder of your shower and then rinse thoroughly.

This product might not be for everyone. Some prefer to shampoo their hair because they like the squeak they get when they rinse the shampoo, or they just prefer the lather. But for others, WEN has been a positive experience. Some reviewers rave that their frizzy, unmanageable hair has transformed to soft and shiny. Others say that WEN has brought back life and curls to previously lifeless hair. Some have experienced less breakage and more length to their hair using the WEN cleansing conditioner.

Whether your hair is short or long, curly or wavy, colored or natural; cleansing conditioners are a product that can be considered if you’re looking to have more healthy hair by retaining your natural oils.
